The City of Sanctuary UK was established in 2005 to bring people together to provide more welcoming and inclusive communities. In 2007 Sheffield became the first City of Sanctuary. Since then, hundreds of local councils, schools, universities, libraries and theatres have been awarded with sanctuary status, pledging to create a culture of solidarity, inclusivity and welcome.

Community and faith organisations in Southend had expressed a desire to pursue City of Sanctuary status, and so we are contributing to and supporting this work. We believe it will bring new ideas and learning, the benefits of wider networks and communities of practice, and further impetus to the work already underway to support new communities in the city.

We would love to hear from you if you have arrived to Southend as a refugee, migrant, or asylum seeker. Please consider completing our survey, or contact resettlement@southend.gov.uk. The survey will be open until April 2025.

  • Brief outline of City Of Sanctuary

Southend City Council is working to become a City of Sanctuary.  This means making sure vulnerable migrants, refugees and Asylum seekers are welcome and are supported as well as they can be in Southend.

     Purpose of the survey

The aim of the survey is to gather your views, experiences, insights and comments, so that we have a good understanding of your first-hand experience of being in Southend as a refugee, migrant or asylum seeker. You can answer as many questions as you would like to, you don’t need to answer every section, but we appreciate as much information as you are happy to share with us.
