Survey findings
The survey results indicate the following:
- The majority of respondents learned about the survey through a letter or email from Southend City Council.
- Most children attend mainstream schools, and autism is the most common reason for needing additional support.
- All respondents had applied for an EHC Needs Assessment, with 60% of assessments being agreed upon. For those not agreed, the primary reasons were insufficient information or other unspecified reasons.
- Parents generally felt involved in their child's assessment, and schools/settings and external specialists contributed to the assessment.
- Information flow throughout the assessment was largely perceived as "partially" adequate.
- While parents felt involved in planning support, some felt they did not have a say in decisions. Children's involvement in drafting the plan was mixed, with some not being involved or having a say.
- The EHCP was generally seen as partially reflecting and meeting the child's needs.
- The overall experience of the assessment process was split between "somewhat satisfied" and "happy with the process but some things could be improved."
- The majority of respondents consented to being contacted for future discussions.
In conclusion, while there are positive aspects such as parental involvement and professional contributions, the survey reveals significant challenges in the EHC needs assessment process, particularly concerning communication clarity and efficiency. The survey summary results are available upon request.
