Have Your Say on the Future of Local Government in Essex

We believe that we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape how local government works for our communities.

The Government is consulting on the future structure of councils in Essex, known as Local Government Reorganisation (LGR), and we urge everyone to take part.

Southend-on-Sea City Council, along with nine district, borough and city councils, has put forward a plan for five unitary councils

Independent research shows smaller, more local councils deliver better services, are more responsive to residents, and offer better value for money. A five-unitary model would mean councils closer to the communities they serve, with local leadership, local accountability, and local priorities at the heart of decision-making.

This isn’t change for change’s sake. It’s about creating a system that works better for Essex. The current two-tier structure is outdated and often confusing. A five-unitary model would simplify things, reduce duplication, and ensure every pound of public money is spent wisely.

You can read the full proposal and other options on the LGR Essex Hub. A stronger Greater Essex | Essex Local Government Reorganisation Hub

Let’s build a future where councils are truly local, effective, and focused on what matters most to our communities.

The Survey

Consultation is open from 19 November 2025 until 11 January 2026.
