Consultation has concluded
The Council recently undertook a consultation on the impact on individuals on changing our policy of requiring side access for wheelchair accessible taxis, to which there was a low number of responses.
Following on from this consultation, to try to increase the number of wheelchair accessible vehicles available, and to respond to the high cost of side-access vehicles, we are planning to adopt a new condition.
This condition will allow hackney carriage vehicles to have either rear or side-access for wheelchairs.
Your attention is also brought to the duty of all private hire and hackney carriage drivers to carry passengers with a disability, and their mobility aids. This means all drivers will need to provide assistance to the passenger to get in and out of the vehicle and to load their luggage, wheelchair or mobility aid.
If you would like to be involved, you can also take part in our survey below. If you have any questions, please email placeconsultations@southend.gov.uk.
