Consultation has concluded

This consultation has now closed.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council currently commission a specialist drug and alcohol treatment service for adults and a separate specialist treatment service for young people. The current adult service contract is coming to an end next April. We have an opportunity to review what’s currently on offer, to check whether these services deliver all the things that people feel they need to, and to plan what our future services might look like.

We need your views and ideas on:

  • What works well with our current services?
  • What you feel doesn’t work as well?
  • Whether you feel there are any significant gaps?
  • What an ideal service would look like in future?

Your feedback will help shape our ideas and in turn, the specification that we will write for our future services.

This consultation will be open for six weeks from 18th May 2021 to 28th June 2021 and there will be several ways that you can help us shape our future services:

1. Complete the survey below (and encourage others to do so)

2. Join us for one of our online consultation events on 26th May 2021, 6pm or 4th June 2021, 2pm

We would really value your ideas on how we make sure we have good services in future.

Please email SouthendDAAT@southend.gov.uk :

  • If you would like to register for one of the online consultation events
  • If you would like to take the survey or participate in a different way (e.g. a paper copy) or,
  • If you have any questions about the consultation

    The Consultation

We asked citizens of the borough for their views on the current drug and alcohol treatment offer across Southend, seeking their views of what they think currently works well, what they feel needs to change, and what they feel needs to improve.

We received 27 responses from those who had previously accessed treatment services (and/or knew someone who had), and 6 responses from professionals. Although this was a relatively low sample, it built upon previous consultation activity conducted prior to the pandemic which saw 117 responses from those with direct or indirect experience of accessing the services, and another 23 responses from professionals across several support services.

    The Feedback

Overall, the findings of the latest online consultation echoed the key findings of the previous consultation activities:

    • Broadly, people are satisfied with the current approach to drug and alcohol treatment and the services that are in place
    • People state that they would like to have more 1-1 individual support available
    • People would like “recovery” from drug and alcohol use to be more visible and to see more people who have recovered leading groups and activities, and being employed in the services

A summary report of the surveys are available on Your Say Southend

    Next Steps

From reviewing the surveys’ results, we have developed a new specification for our drug and alcohol treatment contracts which encourage providers to:

    1. Develop services which enable greater engagement with the service users
    2. Provide opportunities for service users in recovery to design and deliver activities to engage those just coming into the service
    3. Provide professional development pathways for individuals to move from service use into peer support, volunteering opportunities and into employment with the treatment service or other allied support services

The last full consultation about the adult service contract took place in late 2016 / early 2017. Alongside this, the Social Inclusion Team had begun consultation with service users in late 2019 / early 2020, prior to the pandemic which shifted our plans for commissioning new services. Generally the themes that emerged from these consultations were:

    • Most people are happy with the services they have engaged with
    • Most felt they had been helped to achieve their goals with regard to addressing their drug and alcohol use
    • The key theme for improvement was for more one-to-one time with their keyworkers

We are keen to understand what your views and perceptions of the service more recently are as well.
