Background
The pop upparks willprovide small pockets of greenery on the High Street bringingcolour and life to underutilisedareas and key access points to the High Street. The proposals include seating, planting, lighting and play. These spaces will enrich the visitor experience, help drive economic growth, enhancebiodiversity, and contribute to community wellbeing.
Proposal
The proposed locations of the five pop up parks are:
High Street north approach:akey pedestrian route from SouthendVictoria Train Station and is agateway entrance to the High Street
Southchurch Road:will link to the future Better Queensway scheme
Queens Road: west side of the High Street connecting through to The Forum and local businesses on Queens Road
South of the railway bridge:extensively pavedand would benefit from increasedgreening andcurrently lacks interest andactivities
Southern end of High Street:long narrow areas of paving which have theopportunity to be enhanced andincrease greening
The Consultation
The consultation ran from 20 September to 16 November 2023 and was open to all residents and businesses living or trading in the Borough.
Survey interaction
The main consultation was delivered through the Southend-on-Sea City Council online consultation portal. A total of 1,100 residents and businesses participated. The responses varied and of that over 800 were informed which indicates they had visited the project page and viewed the survey and documents but chose not to comment, 145 responded online.
Discussions are still ongoing on a way forward which will follow the Councils cabinet process.
