Housing

Southend-on-Sea City Council introduced a Selective Licensing scheme in December 2021 across eight neighbourhoods in Milton, Kursaal, Victoria and Chalkwell wards. The scheme forms part of the Council's wider housing strategy to help ensure privately rented homes are safe, well-managed and support thriving communities.

What is Selective Licensing?

Selective Licensing requires private landlords within designated areas to obtain a licence for properties they rent out. The scheme aims to tackle issues such as poor housing conditions, anti-social behaviour and crime, helping to improve neighbourhoods for residents and tenants.

What comes next?

Southend-on-Sea City Council is considering whether to introduce a new Selective Licensing scheme from 2027. We are currently gathering evidence and views from residents, tenants, landlords, businesses and other stakeholders to help inform the proposal.

This questionnaire preview has been published to provide an overview of the topics and questions that may be included in the consultation. Feedback on the questionnaire and consultation approach may be used to inform the final consultation materials.

A full public consultation is now live. If you would like to take part, select 'Follow the Project' to receive updates and be notified when the consultation opens. By following the project, you'll receive the latest information and opportunities to have your say.
