Consultation has concluded
Welcome the the Soaring 2 Success South Essex Project! This project is being offered to young people aged 14+ across South Essex by The Air League in partnership with South Essex Local Authorities, The Voluntary Sector and STEM Learning.
On the project young people will have the opportunity tolearn about the careers available in the aviation sector through a range of activities and inspirational talks from industry professionals. Young people will also be invited to take part in a competition for a chance to win one of the 100 gliding experiences being offered as well as finding out how to apply for a scholarship after the project!
Virtual sessions will be run either in school, college or during other groups (for example young carers) and will also be recorded and made available to be completed at home.
Key dates:
30th September 2020 - Virtual Introduction A virtual welcome onto the project! This will be shown in school/ college or during other groups but where this is not possible the session will be recorded and made available to complete either at home or in school/ college at a different time.
October 2020 - January 2021 - Virtual Workshops & Activities Hear from a variety of industry professionals and take part in work place focused activities.
February/March 2021 - Competition Begins All young people will be asked to complete a video entry explaining about themselves, what they have enjoyed and learnt from the project and why they would like to take part in the gliding experience.
April 2021 - Gilding Opportunity Gliding opportunity for 100 young people (winners of the competition).
Summer 2021 - Scholarship Opportunity Opportunity for young people to apply for the national Air League scholarship programme.

Restrictions around taking part in the gliding
Please keep in mind the below restrictions that are in place for the gliding activity, if you would like to discuss these please contact rosiepowley@southend.gov.uk we are keen to avoid restricting anyone from this activity.
Age ranges
Anyone under 18 years old will require the written consent of a parent or guardian. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while at the airfield. Children over 14 years old will be able to fly a glider at the discretion of the instructor conducting the lesson. There is no upper age limit.
Sizes and weights
If you are heavier than 16st 4lb (228lb, 103 kg), you will not be able to fly in our gliders as most gliders have a weight limit of 242 lb (110 kg) for each seat. The pilot’s weight must include the weight of a parachute (15 lb or 7 kg). People over 6’ 4’’ (193cm) may not be able to fly in our gliders. The lower weight limit is approximately 44kg (7 stone or 98 pounds). The minimum height for pupils is approximately five feet (152 cm). If your weight is lower than the limit, please state this in your form as we may be able to accommodate you depending on your weight.
Other considerations
You will need to be able to understand and communicate clearly in English and adhere to instructions given by your instructor. You will need to be physically able to get yourself out of the glider un-assisted. This activity may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
