Stop our Council's proposed plans to introduce 20mph speed limits in our residential streets, based on the flawed '20 is plenty' scheme
When a combustion engine vehicle is driven at 20mph, it emits approximately 50% more dangerous exhaust emissions than if it was travelling at 30mph over the same distance of road. Reason: To enable a vehicle to maintain a steady momentum of 20mph, it usually needs to operate in a lower gear ratio, which results in it maintaining a similar level of rpm as if travelling at 30mph. If you do not believe me, please carry out this simple experiment with your own combustion engine vehicle. i.e. Drive your vehicle at a constant 30mph and record the engine rpm reading. Repeat the exercise at 20mph and record the rpm reading. You should find the rpm readings are similar (Minor variations between different vehicle manufacturers will occur). Please ensure that it is safe to conduct this experiment, and the road terrain is relatively flat. Also, the '20 is plenty' central government scheme claims it will be healthier for walkers and cyclists. How can this be true? If, they are being subjected to approximately 50% more dangerous exhaust emissions filling their lungs, not forgetting the increased global warming impact on our planet.
