Southend-on-Sea's City Status
Consultation has concluded
Sir David was renowned for mentioning Southend-on-Sea and City Status whenever he had the opportunity.
A community-led bid was going be submitted in December as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. On 18 October 2021 however, The Prime Minister announced that Her Majesty the Queen will grant Southend-on-Sea City Status as a tribute to Sir David.

Tidy up the High Street and make it a town worth visiting by lowering rates to allow new shops to open. At the moment it looks a mess.

City Year
It's our inaugural year as a city. Lets make it count! Fly a flag for all the great and good that is in Southend, past present and our exciting potential. Amplify pre existing events, celebrate our heritage and history. Fly the flag for Southend in 2022. The worlds youngest city.

Sustainable Arts Quarter
Along the seafront to take advantage of sun and wind, set up a series of bars, restaurants, galleries and craft centres which are powered solely by green energy and built to rigorous eco standards. Each owner must sign a contract committing to using sustainable products only. Establish a green collective of individuals to run a sustainability centre to teach others how to achieve high standards in ecology and still run profitable businesses.

Southend on Sea must become as green, attractive and people friendly as is expected of any modern 21st Century City.
Creating spaces for people of all ages to enjoy by reducing traffic on the roads, in busy centres, around schools and in residential streets must now be a priority. The Council is still obsessed with car parking and trying to please the car driver to the detriment of everything else. As a City, there must be a focus on creating attractive, community spaces with trees and greenery. The Town is full of cars all trying to drive less than a mile most of the time. We need some real leadership in place and brave decisions to make this a place that is pleasant, carbon neutral, safer and cleaner to grow up in. Look at modern cities such as Copenhagen, which provide the right infrastructure in the right place for people to use for the purpose intended. We have started with great schemes on the seafront and Town Centre to return spaces to people, we need much much more than this now. But, where is this leadership going to come from though? It`s time for brave ideas and the will to take difficult decisions to create a better place.
