Artist impression of the project

Focal Point Gallery and Creative Estuary are delighted to announce the commission of a new, major public artwork that will welcome visitors and residents to the UK’s newest City – Southend-On-Sea. Lu Williams' impactful, ambitious, and fun concept will transform the current, uninspiring 'gateway' to the city’s famous High Street, as approached from Southend Victoria and Victoria Avenue.

Proposing to create large, playful sculptures in the style of fridge magnets, Williams wants to hear from you to inform the final design!

Lu Williams: ''As a third-generation 'Southender' I have my own memories of the town, but I’d like to invite contributions from others who have lived or are living in Southend and have their own histories or memories they would like to have represented. The sculpture will take the form of large-scale fridge magnet reliefs. If you pop into one of the shops on the seafront you're welcomed by tiny flip-flops and 99 ice creams. I think Southend has a richer history than these represent - from Never Never Land to the punk scene, to seasonal fishing and cold water swimming. This consultation will also give you the opportunity to have your name listed on the artwork, or you can remain anonymous.''
