The 1757 Voices Charter

We, the 1757 Southend students who gave our opinions in the Southend Youth Council Mental Health survey, believe in better Mental Health and Emotional Well-being provision in schools for all Southend pupils. Our views on our personal Mental Health experiences, the available support services and what we think our schools could provide for us have inspired this Charter, which condenses these wishes and gives greater transparency for our aims.

Based directly from our survey responses, these Charter terms specify how we feel our schools can ensure every Southend pupil is better supported with their Mental Health and Emotional Well-being in four key areas: by strengthening trust, having better promotion, increasing support and by creating a more open and safe school environment.

    Hello,

I’m Merril Teresa Biju, Mental Health Officer for Southend City Youth Council. I have been in this role for the last three terms. My role is to organise and run campaigns related to mental health and emotional wellbeing and to address any issues regarding mental health for young people in the City. During my term I have helped organise the worry box project, which was undertaken during lockdown and taken part in mental health workshops. This project is to understand the Mental Health and Emotional Well-being provision in schools for all Southend pupils.

We are contacting you as you have signed up to the charter on behalf of your school or organisation and are listed as a contact. This questionnaire is quick to do - around 5 minutes.

    When was the charter launched?

The 1757 charter was launched in 2019 and was developed to learn what young people in Southend want from their Mental Health and Emotional Well-being support in schools.

    Why this survey?

The result from the 2022 Make your Mark ballot, has identified that health and wellbeing is the top priority for young people in Southend. I have decided to conduct this survey as lots has changed since the charter was initially implemented-  lockdown, the cost-of-living crisis and so on. We hope by doing this survey, we can identify the needs of schools and along with the local authority, we can plan and implement necessary steps to make sure that the young people in Southend receive the best mental health support. Therefore, it is important for you to take part in this survey as every voice can make a difference!

Once we have all the responses, our next step is to collate the findings and share with members and decision makers to identify any further support needed. If you have any questions, please email lucybissell@southend.gov.uk This survey is open until the 7th of November 2022.

Thank you for taking your time to read this and complete the questionnaire.
