Government confirms decision on new unitary councils in Greater Essex
The Government has announced today (25 March 2026) that a new council will be formed across South East Essex, as part of five new unitary authorities in Greater Essex.
For Southend-on-Sea, this means we will now be brought together with Castle Point District and Rochford District councils, from April 2028.
Alongside the other new unitary authorities across Greater Essex, the South East Essex Council will have responsibility for delivering all services in one area including waste collections, planning, adult social care, highways, children's services and more.
It is important to recognise that there will be no immediate changes for residents. Day-to-day services will continue as normal while planning for the new arrangements progresses.
